Background

The importance of promotion of renewable energy for sustainable development, diversification of energy supply and preservation of the environment is recognised by the governments of EU countries and India. RENET is a project co-funded by the EU-India having partnership of five leading Higher Education Institutions, for enhancing the renewable energy research and technology transfer between EU and India (website: http://www.renet-eu-india.com/). Early commercial development of renewable energy technologies need to be reinforced by increased commitment from the national and international business and finance communities.

Research efforts leading to commercial development of new and renewable energy sources can:

  • create new jobs and industrial opportunities
  • reduce pollution through use of industry residues and by-products
  • stimulate agricultural production and revitalise rural communities
  • provide power to isolated communities and improve access to education and health care.
  • Replace imported fossil fuels saving foreign exchange and reduce environmental pollution.
The European Union has been working with the Indian Government, to promote the use of renewable energy. Under the RENET Project sponsored by the EU, two workshops are being organised to promote increased co-operation between European and Indian research institutes and companies to their mutual benefit and profit.

Workshop Programme  A series of workshop sessions covering specific technology/resource sectors included:
  • Solar Energy (Photovoltaic and Thermal)
  • Wind Energy
  • Bio-Energy (Biomass and Biogas)
  • Hydrogen & Fuel Cell
  • Geo-Energy (Geothermal and Ground Source Heat Pumps)
  • Hydro Energy (Micro-hydro and water mills)
